Team India hasn’t won an ICC event in nearly a decade. Since MS Dhoni led the team to a Champions Trophy victory in 2013, the squad has lost four ICC finals and been eliminated in the semi-finals on four occasions. While Virat Kohli has taken the team to new heights in Test cricket, he has yet to lead the side to an ICC victory since taking over from Dhoni. The same was true under current captain Rohit Sharma, who led the team to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup last year. India also lost the World Test Championship (WTC) final to Australia earlier this month.

Despite victory in bilateral events, the hunt for the illusive ICC trophy continues. In reality, India has struggled to find a leader to replace Dhoni, the only Indian skipper to win all three white-ball ICC tournaments. In the midst of the debate about Rohit’s future as captain, former India selector Dilip Vengsarkar has disclosed the reason for the BCCI’s decision to name Dhoni as captain.

“You look at the player’s cricketing acumen, body language, ability to lead from the front, and man management skills, in addition to being an automatic choice in the team.” We watched Dhoni’s attitude to the game, body language, and how he spoke to others; we got positive feedback,” Singh said in an interview with Hindustan Times.

India will play two Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is in the West Indies next month. While Rohit is set to lead the team throughout the tour, it is unclear how long the selectors would stick with him.
